Looking for a simple and affordable way to package small items like mini soaps, candies, and chocolates? Look no further than coffee filters! This low-cost idea for 'Coffee Filter Treat Bags' was originally published in GreenCraft Magazine (Spring 2014) and 'The Basics of Beer Soap' in Willow and Sage Magazine (Summer 2014), is eco-friendly, food-grade, and durable.

To create a basic package, all you need to do is fold a coffee filter, stamp it with a design, and add a jute cord. But if you want to take it to the next level, you can add more materials to make it fancier. In this video (part 3 of the coffee filter craft series), I'll show you how to create hanging packaging that doubles as festive holiday decorations.

So why not get creative with coffee filters? With just a few simple materials, you can make beautiful and practical packaging for your small items. I hope you enjoy your new crafts!

Tools and materials used to create small treat bags made with coffee filters, including coffee filters, jute cord, hole puncher, jute cord, glue stick, scissors, kraft paper and newspaper print

  • Coffee filters #4 (Natural)
  • Glue stick
  • Hole puncher
  • Jute cord
  • Light kraft paper (Letter size: 8.5x11 inches)
  • Newspaper print (Letter size: 8.5x11 inches)
  • Scissors
  • Stapler

Creating Coffee Filter Treat Bags (Part 3)
Step-by-Step instructions for coffee filter treat bags
Instructions:
  1. Take one #4 coffee filter.
  2. Fold both sides inwards towards the middle to create a glass shape.
  3. Tear the kraft paper and the newspaper print paper into strips. The kraft paper strips should be approx. 1 inch wide and 8.5 inches long. The newspaper print paper strips should be approx. 1.5 inches wide and 8.5 inches long.
  4. Layer the torn newspaper print paper on the bottom and the kraft paper on top. Glue the layers together with a glue stick.
  5. Wrap the layered paper strips around the folded coffee filter.
  6. Secure the layered paper strips to the back of the coffee filter with staples.
  7. Use a hole puncher to make holes on both sides of the coffee filter.
  8. Wrap a jute cord around the layered paper strips from back to front. Tie a knot on the front of the coffee filter for decoration.
  9. Staple the jute cord to the back of the coffee filter to secure it in place.
  10. Cut a jute cord to approx. 11 inches. Thread one cord end through one hole of the coffee filter from the outside to the inside. Repeat the process for the other end.
  11. Tie a knot or two on one end inside the coffee filter to prevent the cord from slipping out. Repeat the process for the other end.
  12. Congratulations! You have now made a coffee filter treat bag.
